Groomer
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Groomer/ Pet Stylist will bathe, dry and style pets in accordance with spcaLA’s standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform basic grooming services including brushing, bathing, and conditioning of animals.
- Perform cleaning of ears, the trimming of nails and anal gland expression.
- Follow pet parent's instructions or Breed Standards when clipping, stripping or trimming an animals' coat.
- Complete de-matting and flea-dipping as per owners instructions.
- Meet grooming revenue projections, control payroll and expenses to meet budget, maintain daily/weekly records, schedule customer grooming appointments, assist in preparation of bi-weekly work schedule.
- Prepare receipts and information required for the daily input.
- Compile, sort, and verify accuracy of data to be entered. Proofread records or forms; compare data entered with source documents; delete incorrect entered data and re-enter correct data.
- Maintain a high level of communication and work collaboratively with all personnel in a manner that is consistent with the Society’s policies. Actively support and promote the mission/goals of the Society.
- Complete daily grooming payroll and commission paperwork.
- Daily complete and file reminder cards for each pet groomed.
- Assist with generating and developing the grooming business by utilizing periods of time when not grooming pets to write and send customer reminder cards.
- Greet sales floor customers and promote grooming services and/or hand out discount flyers.
- Provide and maintain personal clippers, blades, and other hand tools required for grooming services.
- Ensure Grooming Salon cleanliness and safety meet spcaLA standards by sweeping, mopping, etc. on a regular basis.
- Assist in booking grooming appointments and keeping follow-up card file active and up-to-date.
- Assists the public with inquiries pertaining to grooming and other general information.
- Maintain records as required to insure that accurate and timely information is available.
- Greet clients and visitors in a professional and friendly manner.
- The Groomer will prepare dogs for checkout condition. After management approval, dogs will be released to the owner as scheduled.
- Purchase and maintain grooming supplies in compliance with budgetary controls.
- Perform other duties as required to improve the functioning of this organization.
Job Related and Essential Functions:
- Aptitude for basic customer service and communication skills.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the grooming industry, and have at least three year's experience in grooming all breeds.
- Professional appearance and demeanor.
- Demonstrate a keen and genuine interest in all kinds of animals.
- Able to demonstrate basic knowledge in the grooming industry.
- Experience working with animals in a sheltering or commercial environment is desirable.
- Ability to process paperwork and maintain an efficient records system.
- Ability to function independently.
- Work different shifts, weekends and holidays as assigned.
- Ability to meet physical requirement.
- Apply mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, fractions and percentages to practical situations.Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; express ideas effectively, orally and in writing.

- Knowledge of:
- Various breeds of dogs, cats and other domestic animals.
- Various kinds of animal behavior and knowledge of basic domestic animal care and safe, humane animal handling.
Other Essential Qualifications:
- Physical Demands
- Work well with all types of domestic animals including but not limited to dogs and cats.
- Requires the ability to stand, walk, run, sit and kneel, crouch or crawl and climb different levels of height.
- Be able to move animals and merchandise up to 50 pounds.
- Perform work, which involves frequent lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 15 lbs. and occasionally 50 lbs.
- While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands & fingers; handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and listen.
- Manual dexterity sufficient for handwritten documents.
- Working Conditions

- Dealing with possible unruly, vicious and dangerous animals.
- Dealing with possibly hostile and overly-emotional public.
- Ability to handle heavy and fast-paced workload.
- Possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
- Must be willing to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays and standby.

Experience, Skills and Training:
- Must have a positive approach and rapport with animals and people.
- Experience in the use of positive reinforcement methods, including humane products such as muzzles.
- Knowledge in both feline and canine behavior is desirable.
- High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Two years experience and/or training in related work.
Salary Range:
- $12.00 - $14.00/hr. This is a full-time non-exempt position with benefits.
