Summer Camp Counselor

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To work closely with the humane education staff to organize, coordinate and successfully implement an eight week summer camp. This includes but is not limited to; watching and engaging large groups of children, teaching subjects such as animal care, anti-cruelty and native wildlife, attending field trips, helping with cat and dog training, and leading arts/crafts and outdoor activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must have the ability to manage and care for large groups of children in a responsible and professional manner.
  • Assist Humane Educators with teaching presentations. This includes but is not limited to animal care, native wildlife, animal cruelty and career with animals.
  • Assist humane educators on field trips and transporting children to a specific location.
  • Assist humane educators with arts and crafts or outdoor activities.
  • Assist humane educators with dog and cat training.
  • Assist humane educators in coordinating games, lunches and assigned speakers.
  • Provide on-site tours of the shelters.
  • Assist humane educators in completing proper paperwork for student sign-ins, student pick-up, and completing any statistics needed.
  • Assist humane educators in any other necessary duties.

Job Related and Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to manage a large group of children responsibly.
  • Must be able to manage time and activities well.
  • Need to be able to communicate well with director of humane education, humane educators, volunteers, shelter staff and any other personnel you may be working with.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Must feel comfortable speaking in front of large groups.
  • Must be able to commit to working the designated weeks of camp.
  • Show maturity and good judgment; perform the job in a professional manner and work efficiently under pressure
  • Must be able to follow agency rules and standards responsibly.
  • Must pass a background check prior to hire.

Experience and training:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have completed freshman year of college
  • Childcare skills preferred
  • Must be motivated and outgoing
  • Animal knowledge preferred
  • Ability to work with all ages and backgrounds required
  • Ability to speak clearly to a large group

  • Physical Demands
    • While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers; handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk loudly and clearly; and hear. Requires the mobility to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch and crawl. Performs work, which includes walking large dogs, lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 25 lbs. or more.
  • Working Conditions
    • Dealing with a shelter environment in which the noise level is generally moderate, but on occasion will be high. Possibly dealing with dangerous or hostile youth. In the shelter there is often a very high noise level and possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.

    Salary Range: $10.00/hr This is a temporary non-exempt position

    Hours required: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-3:30 PM

    Length of job: 9 weeks between June and August
