PET ADOPTION CENTER ASSISTANT MANAGER

Primary Function: Responsible for managing the daily operations of the animal shelter also referred to as a pet adoption center. The PAC Assistant Manager may also work in the field conducting animal cruelty investigations, disaster response and working public relations events.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Manage the daily shelter operations to insure safe, sanitary and humane operations that are consistent with agency policy and in compliance with OSHA regulations.
• Supervise the proper care and feeding of the animals in spcaLA’s care and assist where needed.
• Responsible for the maintenance, preparation and generation of shelter statistical reports, including but not limited to the shelter daily activities and operating reports, monthly statistics, monthly city activity sheets, drug inventory logs and euthanasia reports.
• Maintain records as required and review the daily paperwork including cash receipts, adoption contracts and inventory.
• Manage the C.A.N. food giveaway program.
• Coordinate the hiring and training of new employees and monitor performance.
• Effectively apply appropriate disciplinary action as necessary.
• Manage multiple priorities and responsibilities.
• Monitor, order and track usage of all applicable shelter supplies, following the proper CAS purchasing procedure.
• Schedule personnel to insure adequate coverage for effective shelter operations.
• Provide back up as needed to insure that shelter department responsibilities are covered adequately.
• Maintain computer records and generate reports.
• May operate ASN or Foster program, as assigned.
• Keep shelter and vehicles clean and stocked with required and necessary equipment.
• Attend City Council Meetings to present an animal when needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Directly supervises all shelter personnel, including health technicians, animal care attendants, animal care counselors and volunteers, and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
• Responsibilities include interviewing, training employees, supervising employees in the performance of their duties, and providing performance evaluations and appropriate disciplinary action as necessary.
• Planning, coordinating and directing personnel training and staff development programs. Prepare and implement training policies.
• Responsible for the positive and professional appearance of the PAC and staff.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications:
• Proven record of superior shelter management experience.
• Maintain eligibility to be sworn as a Level 2 Humane Officer and complete a satisfactory background. (US Citizen, resident of California, no felony or job related misdemeanor convictions).
• Successfully complete all training courses mandated by State law and the employer
• Ability to utilize fiscal management procedures, budgets, statistics, and other administrative practices.
• Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, fractions and percentages to practical situations.
• Effectively handle problem situations involving the public as they relate to the shelter services.
• Ability to enforce laws, ordinances, regulations and humane laws.
• Work well and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public, fellow employees, staff and volunteers.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Flexibility to adapt to different support needs created by varying work styles.
• Work efficiently under pressure and show maturity and good judgment.
• Originate and execute projects with little supervision.
• Ability to operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices. Must maintain insurability to operate agency vehicles as a condition of employment.
• Keep shelter and vehicles clean and stocked with required and necessary equipment.
• Operate a two-way radio in a professional manner, including operating in a quick-paced dispatching environment.
• Ability to euthanize animals in accordance with agency policy and State mandates.
• Work with and restrain animals of all sizes. Remove livestock and pet animals caught in disaster situations such as fires, floods and earthquakes.
• As a member of management, be available to work when and where as needed, including field disasters or emergency response for extended periods of time.

Knowledge of:
• Fiscal management and procedures, budgets, negotiation skills and other administrative practices.
• State and Federal laws, ordinances and regulations relating to animal welfare and OSHA compliance.
• Basic domestic animal care and safe/humane animal handling.
• Basic methods of animal collection, impoundment and registration.
• Various breeds of dogs, cats and other domestic animals, various kinds of animal behavior and illness identification.
• Usage of office equipment (computer, typewriter, copier, fax machine, telephone, etc.)

Desirable Qualifications:
• Experience with laws of arrest, search and seizure, probable cause, evidence gathering, and right to counsel.
• Experience or education with police report writing.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws, ordinances and regulations relating to animal welfare.
• Experience as a humane officer or animal control officer.
• Experience in an animal-sheltering environment with a public or private agency in a lead or supervisory role.

Physical demands:
• While performing this job the employee is regularly required to use hands & fingers; handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear.
• Requires the ability to stand, walk, run, sit and kneel, crouch or crawl and climb different levels of height.
• Perform works, which involves frequent lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 75 lb., and occasionally lift, push and/or move up to 100 lb. or more. The employee will also be required to lift and carry equipment and disabled animals long distances over varied and rugged terrain.

• Dealing with possible unruly, vicious, sick, injured and dangerous animals and impounding the same safely and humanely

• Operations of a vehicle under all types of weather road conditions
• Heavy and fast-paced workload; strenuous physical activity
• Possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases
• Must be willing to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays and standby
• Exposure to all types of weather conditions
• The noise level in performing this job varies depending on the task being performed

Salary Range: $33,200 - $36,500/yr
This is a full-time exempt position with benefits.

Employment Location: The position will work out of the Long Beach and Hawthorne locations.
