DART at hurricane Katrina

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

spcaLA's Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) assisted with the Hurricane Katrina and Rita animal rescue and relief efforts. The team spent two weeks in the New Orleans area providing much needed food and water to the dogs, cats and horses left behind. DART drove back to California and only a few days later, were again dispatched to Texas for a week to help animal rescue efforts from Hurricane Rita damaged areas.

As the team was away, spcaLA received an airlift of 125 animals from the hurricane afflicted area the week of September 19.

The animals were transported to an spcaLA facility where they were tested, examined, vaccinated and documented. The animals were distributed to participating animal agencies in Southern California . These included Southeast Area Animal Control Authority, Los Angeles County Animal Control, VCA, Inland Valley Humane Society, Pasadena Humane Society, San Diego Humane Society & SPCA, Riverside Humane Society, Animal Samaritans of Palm Springs, Humane Society of Ventura County, Glendale Humane Society, Irvine Animal Care Shelter, Laguna Beach Animal Shelter and Santa Barbara County Animal Services.
